MARNIE GLUM'S "CELEBRATION, FLORIDA" IS THE 50s-INSPIRED BOP YOU DIDN'T KNOW YOU NEEDED

Marnie Glum has never been one to shy away from difficult topics in her songwriting - and her debut single "Celebration, Florida" is no exception. Released on Friday 21st May, Marnie's first track is an exciting introduction to a fascinating artist project.

Written during lockdown, "Celebration, Florida" was inspired by the US town of the same name, which was founded, built and (until recently) owned by Disney. "I first read about it in a book about corporatism (because that's how I spend my free time) and was just pulled in by the surrealism of it all. It looks like it's come straight out of the 1950s, in a creepy way. MEGA Pleasantville vibes." She was fascinated with the concept of being "all-consumed" by a private company; "the idea that every street you walked on or every blade of grass you touched could be owned by an entertainment company intrigued me, and got me thinking about my own "relationship" with brands and companies. A lot of them seem a little too close for comfort."

Much of the appeal of the track comes down to the incredible instrumentalists involved. Under Marnie's uniquely vintage vocals, we hear impossibly groovy bass riffs, hypnotic guitars, a multitude of synths and acoustic drums that mesh together beautifully to welcome the listener into this strange and surreal world.

Producing the track are Leeds-based producers Jasmine Wembankoy and Yvonne Han, also known by their artist names Safii Koii and The Sound of Modesty. The single also features beautiful artwork and animation from artist Elizabeth Dale.

MORE ABOUT MARNIE:

Facebook: Marnie Glum

Marnie Glum is the artist project of Charlotte Lynch, a Leeds-based musician who began her music career in York's acoustic scene. She quickly gained the attention of BBC Introducing, and has supported the likes of Guardian-acclaimed folk band Solasta and Sam Griffiths of the Howl & the Hum. Realising her expertise lay in writing "sad bops", Marnie Glum was born.

Marnie's sound is new, eclectic and frustratingly difficult to categorise or box into one genre - influences ranging from Paul Anka and Ella Fitzgerald to Phoebe Bridgers and Mitski can be found across her songwriting, leading to an incredibly engaging live set. We can throw around words like "indie pop", "alternative folk" or "jazz-inspired soft rock", but all you really need to know is this: her lyrics hit hard, her songs slap, and she's got a hell of a lot to offer.
